Season 3: Gollum (The Lord of the Rings) vs Dobby (Harry Potter)

Greetings and Welcome to a new edition of my "Who Would Win Series" and it is going to be Gollum from the Lord of the Rings vs Dobby from Harry Potter.

This particular match up will cover the stats, weapons, skills and abilities. I also decided to give Gollum "The One Ring" where as Dobby will have access to all of his magical capabilities in this fight. The reason why I did this is because it puts both sides at their maximum potential. Thus, both Gollum and Dobby will be given the highest level of power they can possibly get.

For Gollum, I will primarily use the Peter Jackson film version as the main source of info, as it is the more popular version. That said, I will also include some of Gollum's info from the books and of course, the games.

In the case of Dobby, the Harry Potter films will be the bulk of his info, however, there will be other types of info that are mentioned in the books.

Finally, after a huge amount of requests from some of my great friends and fans, I will determine on who will win this hilarious match up.

Without further ado, let's begin

Smeagol/Gollum

Smeagol, later known as "Gollum", is a Hobbit who once had a very, very pleasant life......... Unfortunately, a strange turn of events occurred.

One day, while fishing with his cousin Deagol, they both find a mysterious Ring. Deagol, who actually found it first, claimed ownership of the Ring. But Smeagol, being corrupted by it's power, ended up becoming a total bastard and murdered Deagol in the process. Thus, Smeagol eventually claimed the Ring and kept it like it is his own soul mate (Bread and Butter indeed XD!!!)

Smeagol, now under the corruption of the Ring to the fullest extent, became known as "Gollum", after the horrible swallowing noise he makes in his throat. Gollum eventually earned a reputation as a feared creature under the depths of the Misty Mountains. He became so feared, even Orcs and Goblins dread his own presence.

One day, an unexpected visitor known as Bilbo Baggins stumbled upon Gollum's cave. After a game of riddles, Bilbo eventually won and was granted a ticket out of Gollum's Cave. Gollum, realizing that the Ring was missing after the game ended, flipped out in rage and attempted to find Bilbo, who actually wore the Ring and hid away from view. This allowed Bilbo to follow Gollum to the exit.......... Gollum would never see the Ring again.................. But then he meets up with Frodo and Sam and then sees it once more XD!!!!

After meeting up with Frodo and Sam, Gollum has sworn to become Frodo's pet monkey, and has promised him to take him to Mordor and cast the Ring into the fires of Mount Doom...... Only for Gollum to actually attempt to take them to Dol Guldur, into Shelob's Lair and take the Ring back. This plan eventually backfires, as Gollum betrayed Frodo and Sam at the wrong time, they reached Mount Doom and successfully destroyed the Ring..... after Gollum bit off Frodo's finger and started dancing until he fell into the chasm (Book version)

So, the story of the creature Gollum stands the test of time as one of the most iconic tales in fantasy.

That is a very detailed look at Gollum's backstory. Now, let's see what this creature is capable of.

Strength
Strength is very, very interesting for Gollum. Here is a list of feats for Gollum's Strength.

  • Has broken the necks of Goblins on a regular basis. Mind you, Gollum can achieve this very quickly, as he targets the neck joints of his victims and smashes them with both his fists and a rock
  • Can kick both Frodo and Sam backwards.
  • Using the Return of the King Video Game version, Gollum can, I kid you not, harm Gandalf the White, who can tank above Mountain Level's of Power

Speed
Here is a list of Speed feats for Gollum (I know it is brief but trust me, it is brief XD!!!!)

  • Can ambush his victims out of nowhere
  • Took Frodo and Sam across Middle-Earth in a timespan of a couple of months. This includes camping, talking, danger control and even cooking time.
  • Can climb around large rocks very quickly.
  • Jumping Speed is quick enough to surprise attack his foes

Durability
Durability, this is the most surprising stat for Gollum. Here is a list of Durability feats for Gollum

  • Has fallen 30ft into a rocky ground and survived. A human falling 30ft on rocky ground would have either their bones broken or even die.
  • Took a slash wound from Sam's Elvish sword.
  • Was punched multiple times by Sam
  • In the Return of the King video game, Gollum is virtually invulnerable to normal and heavy attacks (Excluding the finishing blows)

Weaponry

Gollum, uses his hands and a rock as a weapon....... That's it XD!!!!! Sometimes, he can throw rocks but oddly enough, he has never used any other type of weapons at all. Strange indeed

The One Ring

The main driving power of Gollum's personality is the One Ring. Forged by the Dark Lord Sauron in the Fires of Mount Doom, The One Ring is the single most powerful artifact during the Third Age of Middle Earth. Those who wear the Ring are turned invisible. This invisibility is so powerful, even Elves could not detect the wearer. In the case of Gollum, while he has never used the Ring to hide from his enemies before, it is very likely he would wear it, triggering it's effects.

Skills

Gollum, despite his basic and simple appearance, is a very, very dangerous foe. What's more, he is one of the stealthiest combatants in Middle-Earth, using ambush tactics to defeat his foes in combat. What's more, Gollum is surprisingly tough in physical combat also, and he usually targets the vital parts of his victims to effectively put them down for good.

Also, Gollum is an expert at strangling his foes, though nowhere near as skilled as a trained soldier, Gollum's strangling techniques do have an edge in that he can literally break neck joints instantly.

Feats for Gollum

A cornerstone of the Lord of the Rings, Gollum has accomplished a few feats. Here is a list of feats.

  • Has officially, and cleanly, killed Deagol for possession of the One Ring
  • Killed over hundreds of Goblins and Orcs who stumble across his cave
  • Almost beat Bilbo Baggins in a game of riddles
  • Has successfully took Frodo and Sam close to Mordor before betraying them
  • Bit off Frodo's Finger to finally get his soulmate (The One Ring XD!!!!)
  • Won the 2003 MTV Award for best virtual performance
  • Performed in Motion Capture by Andy Serkis
  • Was portrayed very well in the Ralph Bashki film.
  • Reminds me of Ibara and Gillberg rolled into one

Weaknesses

Gollum is one of the weakest combatants in the Middle-Earth universe. Funny enough, he is very basic with his equipment, aside from having the single most powerful artifact at his fingertips.

What's more, Gollum is very much predictable in his approach to combat should anyone see him coming from a mile away. His mindset is also a problem, as his obsession with the Ring can lead him to make mistakes.

And finally, Gollum..... has one of the worst death's you can possibly ask for. In the Return of the King book, Gollum has reclaimed the Ring for his own...... and started dancing around...... to fall into the chasm in the process........ Yes, Gollum ended the War of The Ring..... After losing his balance...... Talk about an embarrassment to the fullest

Still, despite his faults, Gollum remains as one of Middle-Earth's scariest creatures.

Dobby

Dobby is a house elf with a cruel past. He was once the servant of Lucius Malfoy, one of the Death Eaters and a puppet of Lord Voldemort.

Dobby, like a kind hearted elf he is, once knew about the dangerous plot at the school of Hogwarts that will harm the boy who lived, better known as Harry Potter.

One night, Dobby arrived at the Dursley's  house to find Harry and warn him of the plot. Unfortunately, despite Dobby's best efforts from keeping Harry away from Hogwarts, the whole mission was a total failure for Dobby, as Harry and his best friend Ron Weasley arrived at Hogwarts, even though the flying car was literally a train wreck after getting crushed by the Whomping Willow.

Once more, Dobby attempted to take Harry away from Hogwarts while controlling a Bludger during a Quidditch match. This resulted in Harry going into the School Infirmary, having his arm broken, and was out of action for a moment. Dobby, once again, attempted to persuade Harry to leave Hogwarts so he will never be harmed by the evil plot that will occur.

But, things took a twist. Harry actually conquered the dangers of Hogwarts, making Dobby's plan to prevent him from staying there now meaningless, and after giving Dobby a sock, Dobby was freed from Lucius' control.

Afterwards, Dobby once again attempted to save Harry and his friends from the Death Eaters, only for Dobby to die in the process........... Such a sad way to go :(.

That was a straightforward background of Dobby, now, let's see what this kind hearted House Elf is capable of.

Abilities

Dobby, despite his appearance, is a very versatile magic user. Here is a list of spells performed by Dobby

Dobby's Telekinesis
Object Telekinesis: Dobby can use his "Levitation" or simply put "Telekinesis" to manipulate Objects in thin air. A very powerful ability, it allows Dobby to lift stuff without the use of physical force.

Dobby's Teleportation
Teleportation: One of Dobby's signature abilities, Teleportation allows him to go to, well, anywhere he wants. What's more, Dobby can use a much more powerful version of his teleportation to not only teleport himself, but also his allies as well.

Magic Blast: Dobby's Main offensive Spell. While not actually deadly, Dobby can blast an enemy at over four feet backwards.

Dobby's Magic Blast (Look at Harry's hair XD!!!)

Structure Manipulation: Dobby can prevent the magical properties of a structure by taking away portals to other dimensions or locations.

Harry crashing against the brick wall, which was a portal to 9 and 3/4

Magic Disarment: An ability that allows Dobby to remove objects from the user. Disarmemt gives Dobby a leg up against his foes, especially against magic users with wands, which Dobby has experienced with before.

Feats for Dobby

There are a fair few of feats done by Dobby. Here is a list of feats and accomplishments for the house elf

  • Has officially, and cleanly, overpowered Lucius Malfoy
  • Used a large cake and controlled it using his telekinesis to drop it on one of the Masons, this also resulted in Harry being locked up in the house for a moment
  • Was freed by Harry Potter after he gave him a sock............. XD!!!!
  • Saved Harry and his Friends from the Death Eaters..... At the cost of his own life
  • Voiced by Toby Jones

Weaknesses

Dobby, despite being a powerful magic user...... HAS NO STAT FEATS!!!!! This makes Dobby a very fragile combatant should someone manage to get up close and personal with him.

Also, Dobby's magic relies on him targeting his opponent in order to effectively harm them. While the spells themselves are indeed powerful, there are a couple of factors to consider

Firstly, Dobby has never used a spell that is deadly enough to kill anyone. He has never killed anybody in his time in the series, making him practically under experienced in terms of killing his opponent.

Secondly, Dobby's personality makes it that he refuses to kill anyone despite the dangers that he faces. While this doesn't apply to a full on Death match, it is worth mentioning, given the kind hearted nature of Dobby himself.

Finally, Dobby is dead by the time Harry Potter finished it's story arc. Infact, he died from a dagger thrown by Bellatrix while using his teleportation.  It was tragic, shocking and above all, pretty sad stuff overall.

But, despite his faults, there is no denying that Dobby is a powerful house elf.

Summary

Gollum

Advantages

  • Superior Stats
  • Much more experienced than Dobby
  • Stealth literally gives Gollum a huge window to open for a killshot on Dobby
  • If Gollum is to be at his maximum potential, he must use the One Ring, using it will give Gollum an instant win via a kill or a forfeit, because Dobby has no way to counter Gollum's invisibility
  • Gollum, unlike Dobby, is more intent to kill his foes. This makes Gollum much more ruthless in combat
  • While Dobby has magic, all of his magic are going to do nothing to Gollum in terms of damage output.
  • Gollum's Rocks can crush Dobby's Skull easily.

Disadvantages
  • Less versatile
  • Arguably less likable than Dobby because Dobby is a friendlier combatant.
  • Riddles are not going to do jack against Dobby in a Death Match

Dobby

Advantages

  • More versatile with his spells
  • Is possibly more likable than Gollum as a character since Dobby is friendly and kind hearted
  • Cannot be harmed by Gollum's riddles

Disadvantages

  • Is literally irrelevant in physical combat compared to Gollum
  • Far less experienced than Gollum
  • Has no way to counter Gollum's Stealth
  • Because both Gollum and Dobby are at their maximum potential, Gollum will be using the One Ring. Since that comes into play, Dobby will lose the fight via retreating or Death because he has no way to stop Gollum, who is literally invisible
  • Dobby hates to kill, therefore he will be far less ruthless in combat compared to Gollum
  • While more versatile with Magic, his spells are not going to put down Gollum for good in terms of damage output.
  • He will die from one swing of Gollum's Rock hand.

The Verdict

Gollum vs Dobby, while a funny fight to behold, and a huge request by many of my friends and fans, unforutnately is not a close fight. Simply put, to the surprise of some, Gollum has this in the bag very easily.

I do believe that Dobby has more magic that allows him to somehow hold back Gollum for a moment, his object telekinesis is useful, and his magic blast will push Gollum backwards. It is worth noting that Dobby also has teleportation, which can make it that he can be kept at a distance. But that is literally it for Dobby's advantages, everything else tips into Gollum's favor.

For starters, Gollum is superior to Dobby via stats. Gollum can kill a goblin on his own, even a Hobbit, which are far more durable and stronger than Dobby himself. Dobby on the other hand lacks any sort of Stat advantages, even feats, to make him match Gollum in terms of physical capabilities.

It is also worth noting that Gollum is also more intent to kill his opponent than Dobby. Infact, Dobby has never in his lifetime used a curse that kills, or even a deadly spell for that matter. Gollum on the other hand has several ways to finish Dobby off.

Firstly, Gollum uses stealth......... That alone is going to open a killshot, and Dobby has no experience against stealth combatants before. Likewise, while Gollum never quite fought a magic user, the fact that Dobby has to first use his sight and co-ordination to perform his spells requires him to first target Gollum...... and that is going to be unlikely.

Secondly, Gollum's Rock hand would literally smash Dobby to a pulp. Because Dobby is fragile, a single swing from Gollum's rock hand would shatter his bones completely. This in turn ends the fight immediately.

Finally, Gollum has the One Ring. Why did I say this? Simply put, it would be unfair for Gollum to be limited without the Ring's capabilities, therefore, I must put Gollum at his maximum potential in order to settle the match up fairly. Dobby himself is still a powerful house elf, but there is no way in the realm of logic he is going to counter an Invisible Gollum. Once Gollum wears the Ring, the fight is over before it was even a fight.

So, thanks to his Stats, intention to kill, Stealth and The One Ring, I believe Gollum will snatch a victory in this hilarious match up.

The Winner is Gollum

  2. I’m thinking that Donny’s power to negate the magic of the train station portal has a decent chance of working on the One Ring, at least for a time.
But I suppose he’d first have to know about it so there’s little chance he’d survive an ambush.
