Greetings and welcome to a new edition of my Who Would Win Series and it is going to be Smaug from Middle Earth vs Rodan from Godzilla and Toho Series.
For this match up, I will be compositing Smaug in both the Hobbit films and the Hobbit book as well as include his base stats and his abilities for both versions.
As for Rodan, I will use information from "Rodan vs Mothra" and I will also add new images for his info.
As always, I will do the base stats for both Smaug and Rodan, their abilities and finally, who I personally believe will win this fight.
So, without further ado, let's begin.
Smaug
Smaug is a Fire Drake from the Third Age of Middle Earth. A powerful, feared and terrifying dragon to the free people's of Middle Earth, Smaug has earned a reputation as one of the most dangerous creatures around. His invasion of the Lonely Mountains has proved he is a dragon with a desire for wealth and power. Drawn by the Arkenstone, the most prized possession of the Dwarves, Smaug eventually conquered the kingdom of Erebor. Eventually, Smaug was driven out of Erebor and attacked Laketown which resulted in his demise in the process. The Legend of Smaug and his desire for wealth has been told for generations ever since.
That's a brief summary of Smaug, now, let's see what this fire Drake is capable of
Strength
Being a Fire Drake, it comes to no surprise that Smaug is powerful in terms of strength. While Smaug himself doesn't have alot of lifting feats, he does however have a couple of impressive feats of Strength. Here is some of his feats for Strength
- Can effortlessly swim around huge mountains of gold. Gold in Middle Earth is worth more than real life gold and weighs heavier. So for Smaug to achieve this, that makes him incredibly strong.
- Destroyed Dwarven made walls. These walls are durable enough to withstand siege weapons and Giants while staying intact.
- Destroyed Siege weapons without using his fire breath.
- Destroyed multiple structures made of marble, iron and even steel with just his sheer size.
- Was spilled with golden liquid, not only did Smaug survive this ordeal, he overpowered the liquid's weight with little effort and started flying like nothing happened.
Speed
What is a Fire Drake? A winged dragon of course. Smaug himself has many speed feats. While he is very famous for his flight, Smaug is also quick on the ground. Here are some of his feats for Speed.
- Like strength, Smaug effortless swims around mountains of gold, in terms of speed however, he can swim around gold very quickly.
- Flew to Erebor from the Northern Mountains in a very short timespan. This puts Smaug at super sonic speeds. However, the book states he can actually go way faster than this, so the limit to his flight speed is possibly Massively hypersonic.
- Flew from Erebor to Laketown in a matter of 2 minutes.
- Can dodge arrows and siege weapons
- Scales to other Drakes in the Middle Earth Lore. Drakes in Middle Earth are fast enough to even outpace spells from Wizards.
Durability
Smaug, by logic, is an extraordinarily durable dragon. His feats for durability are.
- Resistant to melee attacks and even siege weapons
- Was spilled by Gold but felt nothing except rage
- Durable enough to not be dazed after bashing through walls.
- Could scale to other Drakes. Drakes in Middle Earth have withstood spells and large quantities of explosives that can level an entire fortress.
Abilities
Smaug is a Dragon, as expected, he has the usual abilities that a Dragon would have. They are.
Fire Breath: Smaug's signature ability. This Fire breath is powerful enough to destroy cities with little effort. Smaug even destroyed large portions of Erebor and Laketown. Flight: Smaug can fly around like a dragon. And Smaug himself can do barrel rolls, evasive maneuvers and tricky flying techniques that make him an unpredictable monster
Weaknesses
Despite being one of Middle Earth's most powerful dragons, Smaug himself is not invincible. Infact, he has a specific weak spot between his scales that is exposed for a kill shot should one be clever enough to pierce it with a black arrow. Also, Smaug himself is basically lacking in any form of close quarters combat skills.
Still, despite his flaws, Smaug is one Fire Drake you wouldn't want to mess with. He is, after all, the same dragon that conquered one of the most powerful kingdoms of Middle Earth.... that is saying alot :D!!!!
Rodan
Rodan is a gigantic, ancient pteranodon that was mutated by radiation while living underneath Japan's surface. It is a massive kaiju, measuring 100 meters in height and weighed 30 000 metric tons. Rodan also had a wingspan of 200 meters. Such a sight would have been a terrifying experience to the people of Japan and the world.
Another backstory for Rodan. In Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla 2, it was revealed that Rodan was exposed to radiation on Adonoa Island that was dumped by Nuclear chemicals from the Russians. Also, Rodan's lifetime has always resulted in him facing Godzilla and even teaming up with Godzilla to take down kaiju that threaten Earth.
That is a brief backstory of Rodan, now let's see what he can do
Strength
Being a massive Pteranodon, it would come to no surprise that Rodan is immensely strong. Infact, Rodan is one of the strongest flying kaiju in existence. Here are some of Rodan's best feats for strength.
- Lifted Godzilla into the air and dropped him ontop of a power pylon, mind you, this was during the time when Rodan and Godzilla fought for 24 hours straight
- Lifted a boulder and eventually threw it at King Ghidorah, stunning him for a moment
- Slashed Godzilla's knee, this resulted in Godzilla falling down
- Rammed into King Ghidorah while flying, this also resulted in Rodan getting stunned in the process
- Broke through the tip of a huge mountain.
Speed/Sonic booms
Rodan's speed is amazing. Rodan is one of the fastest Kaiju in existence. Another notable asset for Rodan's speed is his sonic booms. Here are some of Rodan's best feats for speed and his sonic booms
- Regularly reaches Mach 1 and Mach 3 speeds depending on which version of Rodan is used. Still, those calculations put Rodan at hypersonic speeds.
- Rodan can emit Sonic booms while flying. These result in jet's being destroyed, entire cities being leveled, destroyed a steel bridge and Kaiju getting knocked down
- Rodan dodged an atomic ray by Godzilla and still created sonic booms that created huge explosions in the water in the process
- Destroyed New York city with a sonic boom
- Dodges Kaiju attacks, sometimes Kaiju like Godzilla, King Ghidorah and Mechagodzilla had trouble tagging Rodan with their energy blasts
- Has traveled around Japan for hours without stopping.
- Flew from New York City to Mount Fuji without any form of tiring.
Durability
Rodan is also a very tough kaiju to take down. He has withstood heavy amounts of punishment and always has a strong willpower to try and take down his opponents. Here are some of his best durability feats
- Virtually un phased by military weaponry. Even artillery shots tickle Rodan
- Tanked energy blasts from Godzilla, Mechagodzilla, and King Ghidorah
- Took a tail swipe from Godzilla, Rodan shrugged it off
- Was getting strangled by Godzilla, which resulted in Rodan coughing out blood. In the same encounter, Rodan took an atomic blast from Godzilla and still kept flying.
- Took a massive bump by Angurius, who was swung by Godzilla's tail swipe, knocking both Angurius and Rodan to the ground, neither Rodan or Angurius died, though they did lose the fight against Godzilla.
Abilities
Like alot of Kaiju, Rodan is armed with devastating abilities. These abilities include:
- Wind Blasts: Rodan creates gale force winds by flapping his massive wings, these result in devastating power to everything in his vicinity including cities. Rodan can also exhale winds to create a sonic ray.
- Pecks: Rodan's signature ability, he pecks his opponents with his beak as his melee attack. It is powerful enough to destroy boulders with very little effort and even hold down Godzilla for a bit.
- Wing Slash: Rodan can use his wings to slash at his opponents. He used this ability to knock down Godzilla for a moment
- Chest Spikes: Rodan's chest is armed with spikes that are used for scratching his opponents while flying.
Fire Rodan
After Rodan was defeated by Godzilla, he was eventually revived due to more radiation and eventually became Fire Rodan. This form of Rodan vastly increases his power level and grants new abilities. These include
- Uranium Heat Ray: Fire Rodan emits a powerful heat ray that is capable of harming Godzilla and Mechagodzilla. It can also destroy buildings with very little effort
- Life Absorption: Fire Rodan absorbs the life of smaller animals such as birds, fish, mammals and other creatures to heal himself.
Weaknesses
Despite Rodan's amazing stats and his versatile abilities, he is far from invincible. Infact, Rodan's encounters with Godzilla and Mechagodzilla have resulted in Rodan taking massive amounts of damage, eventually mortally wounding and even killing Rodan in the process. Infact, Rodan's encounter with Ghidorah usually relied on help by Godzilla and Mothra to take Ghidorah down.Also of note, Rodan speed, while very fast by kaiju standards, can still be caught up by kaiju that are just as fast or even faster than Rodan himself.
Still, despite his flaws, Rodan is, and remains to this day, as one of the coolest kaiju in existence. Really, a giant Pterosaur that can destroy anything in it's path? I absolutely love that!!!!!
Summary
Smaug
Advantages
- More nimble than Rodan, giving him more agility
- Being smaller, Rodan might have a hard time attacking Smaug for a while
- Smarter than Rodan, since Smaug can think and even talk.
- Voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch
Disadvantages
- Outright annihilated by Rodan in the stats trinity.
- Has never demonstrated the same level of destruction as what Rodan did in his entire lifetime.
- His abilities, while powerful, doesn't match Rodan's abilities in terms of both firepower and versatility
- Not as experienced as Rodan
- Being smaller, while it does help Smaug become more nimble and harder to target, also makes Smaug puny compared to Rodan, who is taller than a skyscraper.
- Weighs less than Rodan.
- Exposed weakness in his chest can be exploited by Rodan if he is clever enough to achieve it.
- Can still die from Rodan's sheer power regardless of the weak spot.
- Outright destroyed in terms of close quarters combat.
- Fire Rodan is overkill
Rodan
Advantages
- Destroys Smaug in the Stats Trinity
- Way more powerful and destructive in terms of firepower
- More melee attacks than Smaug
- Appeared in more movies and games, giving Rodan the combat experience edge
- Much larger and heavier, which makes Rodan way more difficult to put down.
- Fire Rodan wins the match up with no effort.
- Has a way more badass roar
- Way cooler than Smaug
Disadvantages
- While bigger than Smaug, Rodan would probably have a harder time attacking Smaug since he is more nimble.
- Not as smart as Smaug.
- Made Godzilla land ontop of a pylon crotch first.... Dirty Rodan..... Dirty
Conclusion
Wow, Smaug vs Rodan is literally, one of the biggest stomps ever. Infact, this match up is so one sided that it is almost laughable to think that one combatant has a chance here. To cut it short, Rodan destroys Smaug in virtually every single category aside from Intelligence. I do believe Smaug is smarter than Rodan and he can plan things on the fly (No pun intended) but that is literally the only advantage Smaug has. Rodan on the other hand has countless ways to crush Smaug.
Firstly, Rodan is huge, really, really huge. What is interesting here is the sheer size of Rodan is more than enough to destroy Smaug. It is estimated that Smaug is around 3000-5000 tons. Okay, Rodan himself weighs 30 000 metric tons....... That weight difference is huge!!! Infact, Smaug really can't harm or do anything to Rodan at all.
Rodan himself has tanked blasts from Godzilla, and that encounter alone puts Rodan above Smaug in terms of durability by a landslide since Godzilla himself destroyed Multiple cities with absolutely no effort. Also, Rodan himself destroyed cities with his sonic booms, which will eventually blast Smaug off course and opening him to a killshot.
And the last factor coming into play, Rodan is way more experienced than Smaug. While Smaug has achieved impressive feats, Rodan on the other hand has achieved way more impressive feats. Like lifting Godzilla vs destroying Dwarven walls..... Not close at all. It also doesn't help that Rodan's melee attacks are capable of harming Godzilla, who can tank military weapons and other Kaiju attacks with no effort. So for Rodan to hurt Godzilla, that alone makes him more than capable of destroying Smaug.
Oh yes, Smaug has died from a Black arrow, Rodan could simply peck Smaug to death and eventually overpower Smaug in the long run.
And, do not forget about Fire Rodan. Fire Rodan is basically a super form of Rodan and, well, should it even be included, Smaug has no way in defeating Fire Rodan since it has more powerful abilities and even self healing......
In the end, thanks to his Strength, Speed, Durability, Abilities, Close Quarters combat and Fire Rodan, I believe Rodan clearly wins this match up
