Greetings and Welcome to another edition of my "Who Would Win" Series and it is going to be Flik from A Bug's Life vs Z from Antz.
For this match up. I decided to focus on the movies as the source of information.
Flik will have his entire equipment at his disposal so he can have the highest level of power he can possibly get.
As for Z, he will have equipment that he has used throughout the "Antz" film, as he has consistently used them in key moments of the film
Finally, I will look into the Base stats, Skills, Items, Feats, Weaknesses and finally, who I personally believe will win this fight
So, let's begin this epic of miniature proportions (A Bug's Life tagline :D!!!!!!!)
Flik
In a world of miniature proportions, an Ant Colony on "Ant Island" is constantly feeding food to a ruthless gang of Grasshoppers led by "Hopper".
The Colony managed to meet the Quota in time. All is well until a silly ant named Flik ruined everything. You see, Flik attempted to speed up production by inventing a Harvester that would prove to be beneficial to the Colony's Production rate.
Unfortunately, the ants denied Flik's idea and instead, forced him to get rid of the machine. After a while, the Grasshoppers arrived at Ant Island and before they touched down, Flik accidentally dumped all of the food from the offering stone into a pond.
After a tense moment with Hopper, the Ants were forced to do a "Double the Amount" procedure.
Realizing that the only way to stop these problems, Flik thought of an idea. He wants to get help from the outside world in order to finally get rid of the Grasshoppers. After much deliberation, the Council and Princess Atta agreed to send Flik on an adventure to get help.........
This is where it get's funny. You see, Flik was suppose to get "Warrior Bugs". Turns out, he got a gang of bugs, but they were Circus Bugs who just got out of business due to a failed "Flaming Death" plan (It was a blockbuster for the crowd at least XD!!!)
After Flik returned with the Bugs, they were greeted as heroes. Unfortunately, as the Bug's realized that they will be killing the Grasshoppers, they decided to try and flee from Ant Island for good......
As Flik tried to stop them, a Bird managed to stop their plans and made them go back to Ant Island.
Thankfully, the Bug's did have an extended stay, and this time, after the Bird incident, Flik thought of an Idea: To build a Bird to scare off the Grasshoppers.
This idea managed to be almost perfect........... Unfortunately, things went downhill, as P.T Flea, the boss of the Circus, managed to find his lost Bugs. This resulted in Flik being branded as a liar, who was then banished out of Ant Island for his stupidity.
Soon after, Princess Dot managed to find Flik with the Circus Bugs and begged them to return to Ant Island. Turns out, Hopper and his gang returned and because the Ants did not meet the Quota, they were forced to find all food on the island non stop.
Flik, after being motivated by Dot, managed to devise a plan to rescue the Ants from the Grasshoppers.
After an epic battle, Flik and his friends managed to get rid the Grasshoppers using the bird they built, killing Hopper by luring him to the "Real" bird, scaring off the Grasshoppers which prevented Ant Island from giving them food permanently, and gained the trust of the colony for eternity. In fact, in the aftermath, Flik's inventions became the cornerstone of the Colony's Food Production......... Talk about a happy ending :D!!!
That is a straightforward background of Flik. Now, let's see what this friendly Ant is capable of.
Strength
Flik attempting to pull back the Food onto the offering stone |
Despite his miniature size, Flik is actually pretty strong. Ants in the real world are capable of lifting anything that is around 10 times their own size, Flik, is no exception. Here is a list of Strength feats.
- Flik can hold back the Leaf that was holding a mountain load of food. While this actually resulted in all of the food being dumped into the pond, and the feat itself meant nothing in the end, there are a couple of factors to consider. You see, Flik was able to slow down the leaf as it was sliding down, which still makes Flik quite strong.
- Helped Princess Atta and a group of Ants and Bugs lift up half an Acorn
- Can pluck a Dandelion's Seedhead with no effort
- Can perfectly scale to all the Worker ants of the Colony. One Ant in particular was able to carry a huge fruit ontop of his shoulders.
Speed
Flik is actually very fast in terms of Speed. Here is a list of Speed feats for Flik
- As the Grasshoppers arrived, Flik was able to outpace their flight speed just before they reached the ground. The Grasshoppers are quick enough to dodge rain drops and travel at speeds that are equal to a racing car
- In a split second, Flik ran from Princess Atta and went off screen... Twice. The Second Time was a "Thank You" and then a kiss on the cheek
- Ran so fast after looking at the Bird's Nest, even Heimlich the Caterpillar admitted that "He is fast for a little guy"
Durability
Flik is.... well, kinda poor in terms of durability. That said, let's think positive and look at what Flik is able to survive
- Went head first into a rock while flying the Dandelion Seedhead. Flik was fine afterwards
- Was beaten up by Thumper multiple times.
- Was flung backwards after his harvester got caught onto a strand of grass
- Got choked by Hopper and survived long enough to see Hopper get eaten by the Bird and her chicks afterwards
- Was slapped by Tuck and Roll........ XD!!!
Skills
Flik is without a doubt, the most intelligent ant of Ant Island. Funny enough, all the other ants are simple minded and too strict with their rules. Flik on the other hand thinks outside of the box, and this mindset makes him quite resourceful.
It is also Flik's idea to build the bird to scare off the grasshoppers, and it was Flik's plan to save the Colony. Both plans were successful (Even though the bird was burnt, the idea still worked since the Grasshoppers fell for the trick XD!!!!)
Finally, Flik is all round, a great inventor, which means......
Equipment
Flik and his Adventure Gear |
Flik has a load of items at his disposal. Here is a list of his standard equipment.
Adventure Gear: Well, the Adventure Gear is simply a camping gear set. Flik has a tent and a hat...... That's really it XD!!!
Telescope: Flik uses a telescope for recon. He can make one using a strand of grass and water.
The Telescope |
Harvester: Flik uses a Harvester to help speed up production. While this ultimately was a disaster at first, since the Ants started using it in the end of the movie, I will consider this item as a factor XD!!!.
The Harvester |
Capabilities wise, The Harvester has a circular buzzsaw, and a sling mechanism that can throw heavy projectiles at great distances. It also has a storage pouch to increase storage capacity.
Feats for Flik
Flik has done a fair bit of accomplishments in A Bug's Life. Here is a list of feats
- Has officially, and cleanly, got rid of the Grasshoppers once and for all thanks to his plans
- Saved Ant Island
- Redeemed himself by the end of the movie
- Invented some of the best items for the good of the Colony :D!!!!!
- Flik alone is one of the very few likable Ants in "A Bug's Life".
Weaknesses
Unfortunately, Flik is interesting with regards to weaknesses. The most important thing to remember is that Flik has No Combat experience. Even by the end of the film, Flik never had any form of combat training that would other wise make him a competent fighter.
In fact, when Flik had to fight Thumper, Flik was annihilated. Even Flik would have died multiple times if not for intervention. For instance, had Princess Atta not step in at the last moment, Hopper would have squashed Flik.
Finally, with regards to Flik, he has a tendency to have very bad luck. No matter how hard he tries, Flik somehow makes things worse in the end. Thankfully, A Bug's Life did end with Flik overcoming this flaw, though it is still a consistent flaw to consider.
Despite this, Flik is quite a great character. Flik is friendly, smart and very inspiring.
Z
Z Marion-4195, better known as just "Z", is a worker Ant who lived with the Ant Colony since birth.
In the colony, there are two types of Ants, there are the Worker Ants, who serve as the laborers of the Colony such as Digging, Royal Care and Festivities. And there are the Soldier Ants, who are the military and police force of the Colony. Z, unfortunately, has the life of a Worker who always envied the Soldier Ants for having the more exciting experiences in life such as adventure.
One day, Z heard of a legendary place called "Insectopia", by a drunken drone ant. Funny enough, everybody, including Z, thought it was just a myth. At the same time, Z met the most beautiful Ant in the Colony named "Princess Bala", who asked him for a dance...... This drastically changed Z's life forever.....
Z dancing with Princess Bala |
After a night full of dancing and a bar fight that resulted in Bala escaping the scene, Z immediately fell in love with Bala and finally found a purpose in life. So, in order to try and see her again, Z pleaded his best friend Weaver to swap places with him in order to achieve his dream.
The next day, Z took Weaver's spot as a Soldier and planned to meet Bala at a Royal Meeting for the Soldiers. Unfortunately, this was a hilariously out of place plan, as Z actually took Weaver's spot to participate in the Termite War. This resulted in Z going into battle, and luckily, Z survived the fight and was the sole survivor of the horrific event.
As Z returned to the Colony, he became a "War Hero". This also gave Z the opportunity to meet Princess Bala once again. But, as it turns out, Bala managed to snuff out Z as the guy at the bar who danced with her..... Right infront of the Queen and General Mandible. This branded Z as a stalker and a criminal. As the guards tried to arrest Z, who was holding Bala hostage, both Z and Bala were dumped outside of the Colony through a pipeline.
Afterwards, the police attempted to rescue Bala, until a giant magnifying glass ruined everything, forcing Z and Bala to go further from the Colony. After the ordeal, Z found out that the legend of Insectopia was indeed true, after seeing the Monolith.
The Monolith |
After a brief disagreement, Bala finally followed Z while he attempted to find Insectopia. Turns out, Z and Bala are definitely on the right track, as they found the land with "Red and White".
Z and Bala at the Land of Red and White |
Initially, Z and Bala thought this place was Insectopia........... unfortunately, it is just a picnic spot for a huge monster.... You see, during their visit, Bala was kidnapped by the Giant and Z attempted to rescue her. This in turn changed Bala's opinion of Z, from a clueless idiot into a more heroic individual.
After being stuck in chewing gum underneath the Giant's shoe, Z and Bala were then sent towards a strange place, turns out it was this.....
Insectopia |
Finally, Z and Bala arrived at Insectopia. All went well, everything was magical..... until Colonel Cutter, General Mandible's Right hand man, took Bala back to the Colony.....
Z, returned to the Colony to rescue Bala thanks to the help of his Wasp friend Chippy.
Z successfully found Bala, but, as it turns out, General Mandible devised a plan to assassinate the Queen and wipe out all the Worker Ants from the face of the earth by making them dig towards the lake.
Z and Bala attempted to prevent this from happening, unfortunately, the Work Supervisor ignored the warning and as a result, caused a huge tidal wave that literally trapped the Ants in the middle of no where.
Left with just one option, Z planned an escape attempt: Making a ladder. Since Z's reputation as a War Hero and a Revolutionary is well known, the Colony accepted the plan with no hesitation. After a while, the Ant Ladder was a success, as Z helped the ants reach the top, saved the worker Ants and, after General Mandible's death, all the Ants became a single Colony once more...... Turns out, Z and Bala were married and returned to Insectopia for the rest of their lives.
That is a detailed background for Z. Now, let's see what this curious Ant is capable of
Strength
Z, by all intents and purposes, is one of the strongest Ants around. As it turns out, Z is far from your average joe. Here is a list of surprising strength feats for Z.
- Managed to hold this........
which also caused this.........
DESTRUCTION!!! |
Turns out, Z is capable of holding over hundreds of Ants for a moment. While yes, Z did drop the "Wrecking Ball", it is worth mentioning that he did so because he was afraid of Heights and was Noxious. Had Z not have this flaw, he would have certainly held the ball far longer than what is shown in the scene. Since Z may not have this flaw anymore by the end of the movie, it is very likely he will attempt the same level of strength with greater resolve and determination.
- Can dig into dense walls of stone. By ant standards, this is very strong, as stone is literally too tough for some ant species to break, except for Z and his fellow Ants.
- Pulled Princess Bala from the Chewing Gum, which was attached to the Abraham Lincoln coin. What is more impressive however, is that Z had to first free himself from the gum, which would be extremely difficult to do so because the gum was tough enough to not even let go of Bala when Z attempted to rescue her earlier in the movie. Since Z did get out of the gum himself, he would have to extert over 16 times his own body weight in order to pull himself out. This is equal to a man pulling a truck by himself!!!!!!!!!
- Broke through the Colony's Ceiling, which caused a fissure.
- Lifted a piece of Wood above his shoulders.
Speed
Z and Bala running from the Magnifying Glass Fire Beam |
Z is extremely fast. Here is a list of Speed feats achieved by Z.
- Managed to at least match a Soldier Ant's Running Speed. Soldier Ants are physically superior to the Worker Ants in every regard.
- Outran a Termite. What is impressive here is that Z also avoided the Termite's Acid attack at the same time. Ultimately, Z fell into a hole and the Termite died afterewards XD!!!!
Z fleeing from a Termite |
- Outpaced the Magnifying Glass' Fire beam.
- Avoided the Giant Shoe's stomp. Because Z was in the middle of the shoe's landing point as it attempted to land on the ground, in order for Z to avoid it, his speed would be borderline faster than the eye can track speeds
- Climbed onto the Ant Ladder to the Top in a timespan of 16 seconds. The size of the ladder is the same height as a skyscraper.
- Outran the Tidal Wave.
Durability
In terms of Durability, Z has quite alot of Durability feats that make him pretty tough for an Ant. Here is a list of Feats.
- Was punched numerous times during the bar fight. The next day, Z had no signs of bruises.
- Z fell alongside a cliffside and landed on 3 platforms before hitting the ground. However, another factor coming into this feat is that Bala also landed ontop of Z (Do not get the wrong idea XD!!!!) while falling down together. Amazingly, Z and Bala did not suffer any serious injuries from the fall.
- While being stuck to the coin thanks to the chewing gum, Z and Bala were thrown towards Insectopia. Feat wise, the impact of the fall would be equal to that of a plane crash for Ant standards. However, the real kick to this feat is that the gum would have reduced the impact, which saved Z and Bala's lives anyway. Still, for Z and Bala to survive it, makes it very impressive anyway
- Was punched by Princess Bala that knocked him backwards
- Can scale to the Worker Ants who survived the Wrecking Ball's Drop. The impact of the ball would be equal to that of a building crushing down. Amazingly, not a single ant died from the ordeal.
Equipment
Z has used two types od equipment over the course of the film. He has used:
Pickaxe: A Pickaxe that is used for digging. The standard Worker Ant tool
Pickaxe |
Spear: The Spear is the Soldier Ant's main weapon. While Z has never used it despite being in battle against the Termite's, for the sake of a "Fight", Z is more than capable of at least using it for combat if he needs it.
The Spear is shown to be great for both close range and long range, as Soldier Ants were seen throwing them towards the Termites.
The Spear |
Feats for Z
Z has accomplished a fair share of feats. Here is a list of Feats achieved by Z.
- Has officially, and..... well, strangely, survived the Termite War by doing absolutely nothing that contributed to the outcome of the war XD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Is a symbol of revolution for the Worker Ants due to his choice of swapping from Worker Ant to a Soldier
- Rescued Bala from the Giant and from the Coin
- Officially found Insectopia
- Has Rescued the Colony from General Mandible's genocide
- Married Princess Bala and returned to Insectopia
- Voiced by Woody Allen.
Weaknesses
Z Dropped the Ball..... |
While Z is a Hero, by no means he is a superhero.
Z is one of the most inexperienced combatants in fiction, as he has very rarely, if at all, fought anyone one on one in his lifetime. For the most part, Z is just a Worker Ant who, well, Works. Rinse and Repeat.
Also, Z has a fear of heights, which is the reason why he dropped the Wrecking Ball. This was not because Z was weak, it was because heights just makes Z more nervous.
Z is also scared of experiences that he has no prep time for. For instance, before the battle with the Termite's, Z was so scared that he was shocked by the result of the battle first hand.
However, despite all of the faults, Z is actually, one of the most likable animated characters of all time. Z is funny, heroic and above all, just an ant with ideas :D!!!!
Summary
Flik
Advantages
- Has more equipment.
- Is more creative
Disadvantages
- Laughably outclassed in terms of Stats
- Far less impressive Feats
- While Flik's Harvester is versatile, it is also a cumbersome piece of equipment that actually slows Flik's Speed substantially, which can be taken advantage of by Z.
- Not sure if the Telescope is going to do anything to Z
Z
Advantages
- Is much more Stronger, Faster and Durable than Flik
- More impressive Feats
- Since Flik's Harvester actually slows him down, Z is more than capable of avoiding it's circular buzzsaws entirely. Even the projectiles launched from the sling would be too slow to reach Z anyway
- Flik has a Telescope.......... It is not going to be a factor here XD!!!!!
Disadvantages
- Less equipment
- Not as Creative as Flik
The Verdict
Flik vs Z is one of the most entertaining match ups for my "Who Would Win" Series. Funny enough, this is actually quite a good fight for the most part. Unfortunately, while good, it does not mean it is "Close".
Before I cut the wire, let's look at the stats.
Strength wise, this is Z's edge. While Flik can briefly pull a leaf full of large grain and fruit for a moment on his own, I can't exactly calculate the amount of weight for the feat. However, even if that's the case, Z's feat with holding hundreds of Ants is still far more impressive. Not to mention, Z's Strength is just all round much more over the top compared to Flik. I mean, we are having an Ant who can simply crush through stone walls on a daily basis against an Ant who, well, really doesn't have anything close to that level.
Speed wise, this is actually a stomp in favor of Z. Both Flik and Z are very fast, but Z's Speed feat against the Magnifying Glass Beam already makes him way faster than Flik. While Flik can run fast for a little guy, Z is faster due to more impressive feats.
Durability wise, oh boy, this is another win for Z. As it turns out, Z is almost 10 times more durable than Flik........ That alone actually seals the deal. Z wins this fight due to his overwhelming Stats.
Even if you factor in Flik's Creativity and his inventions, they do not really mean much because Z could just use his Pickaxe to pierce through Flik's body like a pin cushion . It also doesn't help that Flik's Harvester would slow himself down significantly, making him pretty much a turtle compared to Z. And of course, Z could just use his Spear as a throwing weapon, which would nullify any chance for Flik to get up close and personal.
Even if Flik does try and make a new weapon against Z, we have never seen Flik invent anything that is sharp enough to kill anyone. In fact, Flik had multiple opportunities to make a weapon against the Grasshoppers. But strangely enough, he never seems to do it.
So, thanks to his Stats and his Weapons, I believe that Z will win this match up and finally put an end to the Ant War. Oh well, look's like an "Antz Life" ended, and guess what? This turned out to be a gruesome Flik........ XD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Winner is Z |
