Season 4: Scarlet Witch (Marvel) vs Zatanna (DC)

Greetings and Welcome to another edition of my "Who Would Win" Series and it is going to be Scarlet Witch from Marvel vs Zatanna from DC.


I decided to give "House of M" feats for Scarlet Witch since it showcases the peak of her power set. Meanwhile, Zatanna's "True Potential" will be used, even though her feats in her side of the spectrum are more consistent, she has not exactly showcased her true peak.... Until now ;)




Finally, I will go with the Powers, Feats, Weaknesses and Finally, who I personally believe will win this "Magical" match up.




So, let's get this rolling!!!!





Why did I skip the Stats?

Funny enough, this match up is vastly different from previous match ups I did in the past. Both Scarlet Witch and Zatanna are not particularly powerful because of Raw Stats, but mainly because of their power output and defensive capabilities. Of course, both are Superhuman level combatants so that already paint's a picture on their level. 




Now that the Stats situation is out of the way, let's look at Scarlet Witch first.







Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch

  





















The background of Wanda Maximoff "Scarlet Witch" is by far, one of the most complicated and confusing backstories I've known. However, I decided to keep her background as brief as possible.


Wanda is the Twin Sister of Pietro Maximoff, and was born to a pair of Gypsies and as a baby, she and her brother were kidnapped by the High Evolutionary. 


Funny enough, Wanda and Pietro were briefly held hostage, then were experimented on and then returned to their Parents (Friendliest Kidnap ever XD!!!!) However, turns out, both the twins now have incredible powers, were tricked into thinking that Magneto is their father, and were abaondoned by their actual mother and then brought to the Gypsies, by a Cow........

Yeah umm...... This is why I said it is confusing. How does a Cow Lady, out of all kinds of adopters, somehow took care for Wanda and Pietro for a moment and was not scary enough in appearance to scare two Gypsies? XD!!!!


Now, cutting it short here, eventually, Wanda and Pietro demonstrated their powers to the world, both for good and bad intentions. At one time, they were under the influence of several organizations to defeat the Avengers, only to then switch their allegiances in favor of the Avengers and even the X-Men. For the most part, Wanda eventually became somewhat of a heroic individual, with some mentality issues but at least she was inlove and even married an android named "Vision".........



Ok, no more weird backstory XD!!!



That is a brief summary of Wanda's Crazy backstory, now, let's see what this powerful witch is capable of.





Chaos Magic Reality Warping

  


















Wanda's signature power in combat is her Chaos Magic. After her experimentation from the High Evolutionary and a bit of modification from the Demon Cthon, Wanda's Chaos Magic became part of her life force.



Strangely enough, Wanda's Chaos Magic is extremely versatile and she doesn't necessarily rely on "Words" to trigger some really cool and also dangerous effects. Here is a rundown of what Wanda is capable of with her Chaos Magic.

Hex Bolts

Hex: Wanda's most simplistic but also, one of her most powerful abilities is her Hex. The Hex is Chaos Magic that when triggered, can cause numerous effects such as:

• Hex Bolts

• Elemental Damage

• Healing or Decaying effects

• Transmutation

• Telekinetic Control

• Reflection and Projectile Control

• Canceling Powers 

• Barrier Creation

Wanda using Barriers for Defense

• Personality Changes

• Erasing Memories

• Battlefield Removal

• Controlling Matter on a Subatomic level, even Lower since this is "Magic"

• Illusion Creation

• Ability Amplification or Cancellation

• Erasing anything from existence

It is important to note that Wanda requires specific Hand Gestures in order to unleash her Hex Bolts for different situations. That said, all she can do is just add effects to those Bolts using just her "Thoughts". This makes the Bolts extremely unpredictable and outright game changing.




House of M 

 



















In the comic arc of "House of M", Wanda's Power Output is literally "Impossible to Calculate". Funny enough, her true potential is still far beyond most characters in the Marvel Universe. What does it mean you may ask? Well...... This.....

Yes, of course, the famous "No More Mutants" quote triggered an apocalyptic event that caused mass extinction. That meant there were no more mutants left and that alone seals the deal of how powerful Wanda became. Oh, and she did all this with just a thought.



Bottom Line, Wanda's Power Output at her best is without a doubt, absolutely broken!!!!








Feats

Being an already "Broken" character, Wanda has quite a list of feats that ultimately make her one of Marvel's most dangerous characters. Here is a handful of feats achieved by the magical Witch

• Is officially the only superhero that the villain Ultron "Only feared". Now, this is quite an accomplishment for Wanda because Ultron has faced the likes of Dr Strange, Thor, The X-Men and of course, the Avengers. But for Ultron to actually be terrified of Wanda showcases just how powerful she is.

• Is one of the very few characters in Marvel to Rival the Power of the Phoenix Force. Funny enough, this already makes Wanda at a Universal Level of Power. But, since the Phoenix Force is capable of wiping out all matter of existence, it is possible for Wanda to be somewhat above that power..... Because Wanda even fought to a standstill against it!!!!!

• Has of course, made the Mutants become "No More" with just a thought. Meaning, Wanda is a living Weapon of Mass Destruction.

• Has defeated the likes of Kang the Conqueror, Ultron, The X-Men and single handily defeated Celestial Beings   

• Portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen

• Funny enough, Wanda also has a much better outfit in the MCU than what is shown in the comics (Personal Opinion) 

Weaknesses

While Wanda is of course an overpowered character, her main weakness is her unstable mentality. What is worse, her concentration sometimes leads to multiple problems that also made her lose alot of fights in the past before. And funny enough, those who are able to manipulate the minds of others can do the same to Wanda. While she is resistant to a certain level of Mind Hax, by no means she is "Immune" to them entirely. Even Professor X managed to control Wanda before, and he is not even close to her level of power.



Speaking of Power, Wanda has the consistent flaw of having a 20% chance of error rate with her Magic. While Wanda somehow managed to be very skilled with her magic, should her magic create errors, there are two problems that come with it.


1. The Spells will ultimately not work at all. Sometimes, Wanda's Magic Control will just stop entirely.

2. The Spell will be amped up to incalculable levels. This also poses a problem for Wanda when she tries to be a hero, since it also endangers those who she never intended to harm.



So really, Wanda's flaws are quite simple to bring up, but of course, she does have that damn Power Output that makes her intimidating and scary. Whatever you do, never piss her off or there will be "No More You". XD!!!!!









Zatanna

Zatanna Zatara is the daughter of legendary magician Giovanni John Zatara and Sindella, who is a member of the mystical "Homo Magi" Race (Homo does not mean it is Homosexual XD!!!!) 


Zatanna's background is actually very interesting. It turns out, she is a direct descendant of Leonardo Da Vinci, Nostradamus and her cousin, Zachary Zatara is also a Magician.



 
Over the course of her life, at one point, Zatanna's father left her while on a quest, and Zatanna had a life long adventure in an attempt to find him. While doing so, she became an accomplished Stage Magician and performed amazing magical tricks that wowed audiences and kids alike.

How mesmerizing XD!!!

At one point she asked multiple heroes such as Hawkman and The Green Lantern to aid her quest to find her father, which also resulted in Zatanna participating in multiple conflicts around the world.


Interesting to say, eventually Zatanna did do more than just try and find her father, she helped the Justice League take down multiple galactic level threats, managed to help John Constantine prevent disaster from the incoming "Great Darkness" and finally met her dad once more...... Until he sacrificed himself to save his daughter from Darkness......... Heroic Dad indeed. (Another version of the story was that John Constantine indirectly killed Zatara)
 



Ultimately, Zatanna's part of the story became more straight forward, while still haunted by her Dad's death, she still persists and helps protect the Universe from anything that threatens it..... with a flick of a Wand :D!!!!




That is a simple backstory for Zatanna (Much more interesting than Scarlet Witch thank god :D) Now let's see what this badass magician is capable of.

It is important to note that Zatanna is a Homo Magi, who are genetically capable of creating magic that is powerful and helpful for any situation. They are of course capable of conjuring "Wordless Magic" with just a thought. However, in the case of Zatanna, her magic is different from most magic users..... You see, if she says "etativel", she will of course, Levitate. Yes, Zatanna's Power relies on her use of reversed incantations. And what is really cool here is that Zatanna has "NO" limits to what she can do. Here is a list of Powers that Zatanna can use.

AVATAR STATE!!!! Oh whoops, wrong character XD!!

• Pyrokinesis (The Ability to manipulate Fire)

• Cryokinesis (The Ability to manipulate Ice)

• Electrokinesis (The Ability to manipulate Lightning)

• Hydrokinesis (The Ability to manipulate Water)

• Geokinesis (The Ability to manipulate Earth Elements such as Rocks and Sand)

• Aerokinesis (The Ability to manipulate Wind)

• Photokinesis (The Ability to manipulate Light)

• Umbrakinesis (The Ability to manipulate shadows)

• Teleportation

• Illusion Creation

• Mental Control

• Mystical Blasts

• Antipathy "Damage Redirection" (Returns all damage done to Zatanna back to the source) 

• Deflection (Similar to Antipathy but Zatanna literally deflects projectiles before they come in close proximity)

• Dimensional Travel

• Erase Memories

• Levitation (as mentioned above)

• Personality Changes

• Money Making (I sure would want that power. Woooo!!!!)

•  Barrier Creation

• Chronokinesis (Can control Time by moving it forward or backwards or even stop Time entirely)

• Energy Absorption

• Flight (Same as Levitation but this time, Zatanna can actually fly at greater speeds, which matched Superman and even Dr Fate)

•  Size Alteration (Zatanna can manipulate her own size or even anyone's size to her desired choice.)

•  Intangibility and Phasing

• Healing

• Transformation (Can make bullets turn into bubbles, magic into water and even flying creatures into bunny rabbits)

• Telekinesis

• Telepathy

• Clairvoyance (Can see into future events and eventually prevent them from happening)

•  Astral Projection (Can use her soul to leave her physical body and travel to other dimensions)

Skills

Of course, Zatanna is one of DC's most powerful magic users. Is she skilled with that level of power? Hell yeah!!!!! Zatanna's mastery of sorcery and of course, as a stage magician, is unrivaled when at her very best. Also, Zatanna's time with the Justice League of America proves that she is also an expert in hand to hand combat. Even Zatanna can use Magic to amplify her striking power like Ice for freezing her foes when she punches or slaps them.


Of course, Zatanna is a master of her Backward Speech and she can speak her words backwards just as fast as she can talk properly. It is also worth noting that Zatanna is fluent in Spanish and a handful of other languages. Even she can say words in those languages backwards to perform magic.







Feats

Being one of DC's most powerful characters, Zatanna does earn the title "Mistress of Magic" for a reason. Here is a list of notable accomplishments for Zatanna

• Is officially stated by the Green Arrow to be the most powerful member of the Justice League. This is already an accomplishment considering that it would mean Zatanna is more powerful than Dr Fate, the same guy who managed to tank a multi universal level blast that wiped out separate worlds and universes. That's right, Zatanna, is powerful enough to rival or even surpass a Multi Universal level being!!!!!!

• Literally became Dr Fate for a moment.

You are merely a mortal, I am a Goddess!!!!

• Has helped John Constantine defeat several Demons. Most of them are capable of wiping out dimensions

• Helped the Justice League of America battle against Darkseid, Amazo and Brainiac.

• Once turned Shazam back into Billy Batson once more. How Zatanna did it was actually incredible considering it takes Very High Levels of Magic to do so. Even Zatanna manipulated Shazam's Mind in order for him to say "SHAZAM!!!".

• Entertained numerous audiences with her Stage Magic. 

• Is literally a badass with and without her iconic Top Hat :D!!!!!

• Was part of the Superman series "Smallville"

Weaknesses

While Zatanna is broken and overpowered, she is actually very easy to take down if you can simply do one thing: Tape her mouth.

Now, this weakness has been exploited time and time again, and Zatanna cannot conjure her more powerful spells while she is mute. And although Zatanna can use Wordless magic, her incantations are the main driving power of her magic style. Should Zatanna's voice be removed or outright blocked, she will be significantly weaker with her power output.


Also, Zatanna is, believe it or not, VULNERABLE TO MAGIC!!!!!....... I mean, for a Skilled Magician, she certainly has a very bizarre weakness to magic. In fact, multiple foes with Magic have severely harmed Zatanna before, and some of them are not even close to Zatanna's skill level also.  


Finally, Zatanna's Maximum Potential is actually unclear to pinpoint. While Green Arrow's statement of her being the Justice League's most powerful member is somewhat true, Zatanna's Power output is very inconsistent. At one point, she almost died at the hands of the Joker, and was even overpowered by multiple street level thugs in the past. Funny enough, on the flip side, Planet Busters have a much harder time beating down Zatanna even when she is not at her best. What's the big idea? Zatanna is confusing in terms of consistency XD!!!!



However, despite her faults, Zatanna is an absolute monster. Her power is absolute, her skills are exceptional, and above all....... Zatanna is one of the best DC characters around. At least in terms of depth and personality :D!!!

Summary

Scarlet Witch

Advantages 

• Using House of M feats, Wanda surpasses Zatanna's Power by a landslide

• While Zatanna is much more versatile with her magic, Wanda's Chaos Magic is actually far easier to pull off because she only needs hand gestures and her thoughts to trigger the effects instead of speaking incantations out loud.

• Is able to nullify all of Zatanna's Magic with her Power Cancellation spell

• Between the two, Wanda actually has more unpredictability than Zatanna via her 20% error rate, that is, if it works in her favor at least because sometimes it can result in catastrophic results like reality warping levels of power that will give Scarlet Witch the win

• If Wanda says "No More Zatanna" or, "No More Enemy", Zatanna is actually going to be erased from existence

  





Disadvantages

• Her 20% error rate could actually be a problem for Wanda, meaning, her magic will be jammed or worse, unable to be triggered entirely.

• Is significantly slower than Zatanna.

• Much less versatile options than Zatanna

• Not as Experienced and Skilled

• Zatanna's Clairvoyance will prove to be a huge hindrance to Wanda's ability to keep up in the long run

• Actually has no counter to Zatanna's Time Manipulation, which also ends the fight quickly

• Without House of M feats, Wanda actually loses to Zatanna via a closer power comparison but with weaker stats

• Not quite as likable as Zatanna

Zatanna     

Advantages

• Is much faster than Wanda via her feats in DC that involve Massively FTL speeds

• More versatile with her magic

• Zatanna's Chronokinesis is a showstopping move that ends the fight in an instant

•  Clairvoyance will allow Zatanna to predict Wanda's actions  

• Is more Experienced and Skilled

• As long as House of M feats are excluded, Zatanna actually does win via better Stats and Versatility

• Wanda's 20% error rate could help Zatanna's chances if the Chaos Magic is actually jammed or unable to be triggered

• Has a cleaner and more understandable backstory than Wanda 

Disadvantages

• Unfortunately, despite Zatanna's Power, if House of M feats are used, Zatanna's power does not compare

• While Wanda's 20% error rate is a factor, it also does make things worse for Zatanna because sometimes, Wanda's Chaos magic would go beyond incalculable levels of power that will destroy Zatanna

• Should Wanda say "No more Zatanna" or "No more Enemy", Zatanna dies

• Zatanna has no counter to Wanda's Power Cancellation Spell which also ends the fight very quickly

• While Zatanna is of course more versatile, Wanda's Chaos magic is much easier to pull off because she does not have to rely on incantations to trigger them.  

The Verdict

  

Scarlet Witch vs Zatanna is one of the best match ups ever!!!!!!!!! Oh yes, out of all the match ups I done for Season 4, this is by far the most fun I've had to research because it was a very interesting and quite a fascinating fight to behold.


Oddly enough however, I initially thought this was a very close fight, but, as it turned out, it is actually not quite as close but still close enough to be debatable. Firstly, I would like to point out that the Stats here are actually very inconsistent due to certain factors. Let's look at their base Stats first.



With just Standard Scarlet Witch vs Zatanna, this is a very close call. However, while Zatanna is indeed much faster thanks to her feats against speedsters in the DC universe, Scarlet Witch actually has a slightly better power output due to her feats involving planet busting attacks and fighting Celestials. Zatanna, while also capable of doing the same thing, unfortunately doesn't quite match up to that level of power. So really, it all comes down to who has more powerful blasts and I feel as if Scarlet Witch has this in the bag. 



However, that said, we now have to go into the elephant in the room: House of M. Turns out, if House of M feats for Scarlet Witch is included, this time, the Power Level is FAR!!!!!! Different. 



Let's just say that Scarlet Witch is capable of mass extinction with just a thought........... Zatanna is not going to match that level of power...... Or can she?



As I looked into this closely, I actually found a very interesting and decisive factor that I already did not mention at this point: Versatility.


While House of M feats are indeed godlike for Scarlet Witch, Zatanna's Versatility with her magic will keep her in the game. While no, she cannot resist being erased from existence, there is one ability that can prevent that from happening: Chronokinesis.




You see, the moment Zatanna is about to be erased, she could simply stop time, rewind it back and then start the fight again. This already proves that Scarlet's Witch's Erasure capabilities are nullified completely.


Funny enough, Zatanna could use other spells like Hypnosis, Mental Control and even Transmutation. Hypnosis will put Scarlet Witch to Sleep, Mental Control is going to be a huge factor due to Scarlet Witch's Mentality, and Transmutation can prevent all incoming spells from reaching Zatanna like turning them into balloons or flowers. Or, Zatanna could just reflect the Chaos Magic back with her Deflection spell.


Then again, Scarlet Witch can deflect magic as well. So really, this is actually a very close call, but I believe in the end..... the winner of this fight will be.

   


Yes, I am taking a nose dive and I will side with Zatanna for this one. While House of M feats are amazing, Zatanna's versatility will overwhelm Scarlet Witch to the point that it is a comfortable fight for Zatanna to take here. Yes, I know Scarlet Witch at her best is unstoppable, but remember, her mind has been taken advantage of before, and Zatanna has spells that simply make her lose her memories, even mind reading for that matter.


What is a real game changer however is Zatanna's Clairvoyance. This alone will keep Zatanna ahead of Scarlet Witch two steps at a time and she can predict events into the future and prevent them from happening...... So really, this fight all comes down to Zatanna being more prepared than Wanda and her skills and experience with other magic users prove she can take on Scarlet Witch.


In the end, thanks to her Versatility, Clairvoyance, Time Manipulation, Mind Reading and Mind Manipulation, I believe that Zatanna has what it takes to claim the victory.
